Dhaliwal Announces New President Of The Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation

October 26, 1999

OTTAWA -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointment of Mr. Robert Hand as President of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC).

"His wealth of experience and extensive knowledge of the fishing industry make Mr. Hand an excellent choice for President of the FFMC," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Sam Murdock, Chairman of the Board of the FFMC, for acting as interim President over the last year."

Mr. Hand has 23 years of domestic and international experience in business development, strategic planning and operations management in the fishing industry. For the last 15 years, he has held various senior positions with British Columbia Packers Limited, most recently as Senior Vice President, Pacific Operations.

The decision to appoint Mr. Hand as the President of the Corporation was made following an open process to identify the best candidate for the position of President. The search for qualified candidates was conducted nationwide by an independent executive search firm.

The FFMCÂ's Board of Directors consists of a Chairman, a President, one Director for each of the participating provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario) and the Northwest Territories and four other Directors appointed by the federal government.

The FFMC is a Crown corporation established in 1969 under the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act to improve returns to fishermen, while operating on a self-sustaining basis. The corporation regulates interprovincial and export trade in freshwater fish, fish products and by-products from the freshwater commercial fisheries in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and northwestern Ontario.
