Graham Announces Harbour Projects For Small Craft Harbours In Nova Scotia
August 24, 1999
OTTAWA -- The Honourable Senator Al Graham, Leader of the Government in the
Senate and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia, announced today on behalf of
the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal
government will invest $750,000 in harbour improvements at the Grand Etang and
Bay St. Lawrence fishing harbours in Nova Scotia.
The project at Grand Etang consists of the replacement of the existing
deteriorated steel sheet pile east breakwater structure with a new rubblemound
structure.
At Bay St. Lawrence the project entails the dredging of approximately
12,000 cubic metres of material from the harbour entrance and basin area
utilizing floating plant equipment with land-based disposal.
"Advance planning for these very important projects is currently
underway, and it is expected that work will commence in October, once plans and
specifications have been prepared and final environmental approvals have been
obtained," said Senator Graham. "With the completion of these
projects, the fishers at both Grand Etang and Bay St. Lawrence will be
provided with enhanced harbour facilities from which they can safely
operate."
The work will be done through a cost-sharing partnership arrangement with the
Grand Etang and Bay St. Lawrence Harbour Authorities, and the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours Program. It is this close cooperation
with clients that enables the federal government to continue to provide an
operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of
commercial fisheries.
