Dhaliwal Appoints New MemberTo Conservation Council
December 23, 1999
OTTAWA -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today
announced the appointment of a new member to the Fisheries Resource Conservation
Council (FRCC) as well as the re-appointments of other members, effective
January 1st, 2000.
Appointed to the Council is Mr. William Broderick of St. BrendanÂ's,
Newfoundland.
Mr. Broderick has been appointed for a term of three years. Re-appointed are
Fred Woodman and Jean-Claude BrĂȘthes for terms of two years. Also re-appointed
are Edward McAlduff and Frank Hennessey for terms of one year.
"I welcome William Broderick as the newest member of the FRCC. IÂ'm
confident that his wealth of expertise and experience in the East Coast
fisheries will be a valuable contribution to the Council," said Mr.
Dhaliwal. "I also wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Fred
Woodman, Jean-Claude BrĂȘthes, Edward McAlduff and Frank Hennessey on their
re-appointment to the FRCC. Their commitment to conservation will continue to be
valuable assets to the Council."
The FRCC was created in 1993 to form a partnership between scientific and
academic expertise, and all sectors of the fishing industry. Together, Council
members make public recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on
such issues as total allowable catches and other conservation measures for the
Atlantic fishery. The Council is responsible for advising the Minister on
Canada's position with respect to straddling and transboundary stocks under the
jurisdiction of international bodies such as the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries
Organization (NAFO). The Council also provides advice in the areas of scientific
research and assessment priorities.
"I would also like to thank the outgoing member, Mr. Trevor Taylor, for
contributing his time and expertise to the FRCC."
Members of the FRCC are chosen on merit and standing in the East Coast
community. Science members are drawn from government departments, universities
or international posts, and represent an appropriate mix of disciplines.
Industry members are knowledgeable about fishing and the fishing industry, and
understand the operational and economic impacts of conservation decisions.
