Minister Of Fisheries And Oceans Appoints Chief Federal Representative

OTTAWA -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced
the appointment of James MacKenzie to represent the federal government in
relation to the implementation of the Marshall decision as it pertains to East
Coast fisheries.
As Chief Federal Representative, Mr. MacKenzieÂ's task will be to work out
practical arrangements on access to fisheries resources that respect the Treaty
right recognized in the Marshall decision.
"I am pleased that Mr. MacKenzie has agreed to bring his considerable
experience and proven track record to assist us on this challenging file,"
said Mr. Dhaliwal. "I have asked Mr. MacKenzie to immediately meet with
aboriginal leaders and commercial fishing representatives to work out a process
and schedule for discussions."
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Mr. MacKenzie is a graduate of Mount Allison
and the University of Ottawa, and holds a doctorate of law from the London
School of Economics. Mr. MacKenzie has held a variety of positions in both the
private and public sectors. He is also currently the Chief Federal Negotiator
for the land claim of the Inuit of Labrador.
