Dhaliwal Announces Harbour Improvements At Catfish Creek, Manitoba
December 10, 1999
OTTAWA -- The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
announced today that the federal government will undertake repairs at the
Catfish Creek wharf in Manitoba.
The Catfish Creek harbour includes a timber crib wharf which currently
provides offloading for 25 - 35 skiffs and a large commercial transport vessel,
as well as berthing for 4 - 8 whitefish vessels. This facility is part of a
network of harbours on Lake Winnipeg that commercial fishers consider essential
to their operations. The wharf repairs, to be undertaken in the winter of
1999/2000, will include replacing the decking, stringers, curbs and fenders with
treated timber.
"This project reflects the federal governmentÂ's commitment to provide
safe and functional facilities for the fishers of Catfish Creek", said Mr.
Dhaliwal.
The project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans,
Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the Matheson Island Harbour
Authority, which manages and operates this facility for the benefit of local
users. It is this close cooperation with clients that enables the federal
government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities
throughout Canada in support of commercial fisheries.
