Premier Binns And Revenue Minister Dhaliwal Announce New Jobs, Service Study For P.E.I.
Charlottetown,
June 21, 1999 - The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of National Revenue and
M.P. (Vancouver South-Burnaby), and the Honourable Patrick Binns, Premier of
Prince Edward Island, today announced the establishment of a Revenue Canada
Information Technology (IT) applications group at Summerside, Prince Edward
Island. The announcement was made at a news conference in Charlottetown
following meetings earlier today.
"We are pleased to be
able to locate this IT group in Prince Edward Island," said Mr. Dhaliwal.
"We want to build upon and expand the significant contribution that our
Summerside facility provides to all Canadians. Joe McGuire, the M.P. for the
riding, along with the Premier, have been instrumental in helping me to make
this decision."
Premier Binns noted that,
"Revenue Canada is a valued employer in our community and the addition of
35 high-technology positions to the operation is a significant development for
Summerside and for Prince Edward Island. This initiative is a good example of
our approach to technology partnerships."
In addition to the
establishment of the IT applications group, the Premier and Minister also
announced that officials from Revenue Canada and the government of P.E.I. will
begin consultations immediately to explore options for better service to Island
residents under the new Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA).
"A service study between
the CCRA and Prince Edward Island will explore areas for improved service and
identify benefits from economies of scale that might be realized by both levels
of government," said Mr. Dhaliwal.
"Discussions that can lead to better service for
Canadians are in everyone's best interest," said Premier Binns. "I
look forward to the results of these meetings."
