Three Members Appointed To The Canada Foundation For Sustainable Development Technology

OTTAWA — Today, the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable David Anderson, Minister of the Environment, announced the appointment of David Runnalls, Rita Mirwald and Carl F. Brothers as members of the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology.

"These members are knowledgeable and well-respected in their fields and I am confident they will make significant contributions to the Foundation," said Minister Dhaliwal, the Minister responsible for the Foundation. "The Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology will play a leading role in encouraging the development of new technologies to help Canada reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years.

"With the government appointments now complete, these key individuals are in a position to finalize the membership of the Foundation and make it fully operational," said Minister Anderson. "We welcome the innovative work the Foundation will be doing and the positive contributions that will result from new sustainable development technologies that emerge. Projects funded under this program will help further domestic and global success in addressing critical environmental issues such as climate change and air quality."

Funding for the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology was announced in the Government of Canada's 2000 budget. The initial amount of $100 million for the Foundation will foster partnerships between companies, universities, private-sector research institutes and not-for-profit corporations. These partnerships are expected to develop and demonstrate leading-edge technologies that will achieve environmental benefits, particularly technologies that address climate change and air-quality issues.

The Foundation is an arm's-length, not-for-profit corporation, which will have a 15-person Board of Directors, including the chairperson, and 15 members.

The Foundation will prepare annual reports which the Minister of Natural Resources will table in Parliament.
