Dhaliwal Announces Third Record Year For CanadaÂ's Fish And Seafood Exports
March 28, 2001
OTTAWA -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced
today that preliminary international trade figures show that CanadaÂ's exports
of fish and seafood products reached a record high of $4.1 billion in 2000.
"I am extremely pleased with CanadaÂ's continued strong showing in the
international fish and seafood sector," said Mr. Dhaliwal. "This is
the third year in a row that we have achieved a record high. These figures
reflect the continuing strength of this sector, which has enabled our industry
to take full advantage of international market opportunities.
"Sound management and conservation measures, together with responsible
fishing and aquaculture practices have created a solid foundation for an
economically sustainable and prosperous industry."
As the sixth largest exporter of fishery products to more than 100 countries
around the world,CanadaÂ's competitive strength reflects the fact that it has
one of the richest resource bases in the world.
The United States market remains the top destination for Canadian fish and
seafood products. Exports to the United States showed strong growth, rising from
$2.58 billion in 1999 to $2.9 billion in 2000, a 12 per cent increase. Exports
to Japan and other countries increased by 9 per cent, while those to European
countries as well as Central and South America decreased by 13 per cent as a
result of a lower demand for fish products. The United States, Japan and the
European Union continue to account for more than 90 per cent of the value of
Canadian exports.
Much of the growth in exports is attributable to the high market value of
shellfish products available from Canada. Lobster continues to lead the way with
exports nearing $900 million. Snow crab and farmed Atlantic salmon follow at
$719 million and $337 million respectively.
Nova Scotia and British Columbia continue to lead in exports of fish and
seafood products. Nova Scotia exports exceeded $1 billion for the first time in
2000, an increase of 9 per cent over 1999 results. Exports of British Columbia
products increased to just over $900 million, 6 per cent higher than the
previous year.
