March 12, 2001

OTTAWA -- OTTAWA Â- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the recipients of CanadaÂ's National Recreational Fisheries Awards for 2000. The awards are presented to Canadian individuals and organizations in recognition of their work to protect and enhance recreational fisheries and their habitat, improve fishing opportunities and encourage industry and tourism development.

"I would like to thank the recipients for their commitment, continued support and participation in activities that help ensure a healthy and renewable recreational fishery," said Mr. Dhaliwal. " In this International Year of Volunteers, I am especially proud to acknowledge the vital role volunteer organizations and individuals play in our society and recognize the tremendous efforts made by them for the benefit of all Canadians."

The recipients of the 2000 awards are:

  • Mr. Jeremy Maynard, British Columbia
  • WinnipegÂ's Urban Angling Partnership, Manitoba
  • Southeastern Anglers Association, New Brunswick
  • Mr. Jack Cooper, Labrador

An outline of their contribution to the development of the recreational fishery is provided in the backgrounder.

CanadaÂ's National Recreational Fisheries Awards, created in 1989, recognize outstanding contribution by Canadians to conserve and develop recreational fisheries and the habitat on which they depend.

Canadian individuals, groups, businesses or associations, working independently from government agencies, are eligible for these awards and can be nominated by an organization or by individual sponsors. A completed nomination form, a brief history of the nominee, a description of the project or activity and letters of support from the nominators can be submitted to the address shown below.

A National Selection Committee of prominent Canadians, representing each province and territory, is appointed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to review nominations and recommend nominees to the Minister.
