Macaulay Announces Federal Emergency Funding For The Clean-Up And Repair Of Harbours In Cardigan Riding

January 10, 2001

MONTAGUE, P.E.I. Â- The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, and Solicitor General of Canada, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the Government of Canada will invest approximately $400,000 in the Cardigan riding of Prince Edward Island. This federal emergency assistance will be used to clean up, repair and dredge the fishing harbours of Naufrage and Red Head that were damaged in the October storm.

"These projects are of vital importance to the Naufrage and Red Head areas, and will make a real difference to fishers by giving them access to safer and more efficient harbours, " said Mr. MacAulay. "These communities will be counting on functional facilities to carry out their fishing activities next spring, and the federal government is proud to support these projects."

Clean-up operations and minor repairs have already been carried out at Naufrage. Furthermore, a repair project involving the wharf and breakwater will be undertaken in the upcoming months. These repairs are essential for the safe and efficient operations of the harbour. The work is expected to be completed by early spring.

Dredging the sand build-up that was caused by the storm in the channel leading to Red Head will be undertaken in early spring in order to provide fishers with safe navigating access to and from their harbour.

The plans and specifications for these projects are currently being prepared by Public Works Government Services Canada. The exact cost of the projects will be known once the tender process has been completed.

Both projects will be carried out by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as part of its Small Craft Harbours program, in cooperation with the harbour authorities, which manage and operate the facilities for local users. Such close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
