Revenue Canada Releases Benefit Programs Report
Ottawa, July 2, 1999...The
Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of National Revenue and M.P. (Vancouver
South-Burnaby), today released a performance report on Revenue Canada's
administration of benefits programs. This is the third time Revenue Canada has
released a report on this area of its activities.
"Since 1990 Revenue
Canada has issued more than t $476 billion in benefits that I know are very
important to many Canadians with low and moderate incomes," including the
parents of more that 5.7 million children," said Minister Dhaliwal.
"These benefits contribute to the quality of life here in Canada, something
that is envied around the world."
The Benefit
Programs Report examines results in the 1997-98 benefit year for
programs such as the:
- Goods
and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) Credit;
- Child
Tax Benefit;
- Children's
Special Aallowances;
- Disability
Tax Credit;
- Alberta
Family Employment Tax Credit;
- BC
Family Bonus;
- New
Brunswick Child Tax Benefit; and
- Newfoundland
Harmonized Sales Tax Credit.
During the reporting period
8.8 million people, including more than 1.74 million seniors, received more than
$2.7 billion in GST/HST credits. The Department also estimates that Child Tax
Benefit payments totaling $5.3 billion were made for more than 75% of all
children (under age 18) residing in Canada during 1997-98.
"I think it is important
for Canadians to be aware of Revenue Canada's contribution," said Minister
Dhaliwal. "The Department plays an important role in administering federal
social programs, and now many provinces are asking Revenue Canada for assistance
in administering their own programs."
