Macaulay Announces A $468,000 Federal Investment For Improvement Projects At Savage Harbour, Prince Edward Island
October 4, 2000
MONTAGUE Â- The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Member of Parliament
for Cardigan, and Solicitor General of Canada, announced today on behalf of the
Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal
government will invest $468,000 in harbour improvements at Savage Harbour in
Prince Edward Island.
"The completion of this project will mean a safer and more efficient
working environment for the areaÂ's fishing industry," said Mr. MacAulay.
"This project underlines the federal governmentÂ's commitment to
maintaining viable and safe harbours in support of Prince Edward IslandÂ's
marine community."
The Savage Harbour project will entail improvement, renovation, repair and
major reconstruction of the existing breakwater at the harbour facility. The
commercial fishing industry is dependent upon the breakwater to prevent build up
of sand bars and to allow safe passage to and from the wharf facility.
This project is being undertaken by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans,
Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the Harbour Authority,
which manages and operates this facility for the benefit of local users. It is
this close cooperation and partnership with Harbour Authorities that enables the
federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and
facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fisheries.
